What better way to end the last day of snowboarding season than a reggae festival? I had a blast this past Sunday at the first annual Bear Mountain Spring Break Reggae Festival.
I was really excited about the line up and loved the location of the stage outdoors. It was kind of rainy at the beginning of the day and I believe that affected the mornning's turn out.
The festival kicked off at 10 a.m. with a performance by Lady Reiko. Unfortunately, I arrived too late to catch her performance. Looking forward to seeing her in the future.
Next, 80 Proof went on stage. The band members are locals of Orange County. Their energy on stage was magnetic and I really enjoyed their performance. They played several crowd-pleasing songs and were kind enough to sign some CDs after their set as well.
P.O.B. (Project Out of Bounds) was one of the bands I was most excited to watch. I had been a fan of their music for quite some time, but had not seen them live before. They played favorites "Disc Junkies" and "Fire" from their self-tiled album. The group also played a few songs from their new album "Love Tone". I had the pleasure of speaking to the band after the show. They were incredibly humble and grateful for their fans; and signed their new album for me.
The Devastators were up next and brought a different kind of life to the stage. I was really impressed with their style and vibes they gave off. I also learned they are San Diego natives as well. Their set was so entertaining. As a first timer seeing them, I can proudly say I am a new fan. The lead singer, Ivan Garzon, approached me after their set and handed me their CD. I thought that was very sweet and I was thankful for the kind gesture.
Thrive took the stage next and it was so awesome to see them perform. Their songs are so full of positivity. I also loved the fact that the drummer, Kenneth Rogers, does vocals as well. He has an amazing voice. Thrive played several songs that kept the crowd going.
Through the Roots had the final performance for that afternoon. As usual, I had such a blast watching their set. I've been a fan of Through the Roots for quite awhile and I never get tired of seeing them play live. They played lots of hits, including my personal favorites: "Slow Down", "Zombies", and "Weekend". The crowd was packed and it was well worth the chilly weather to see everyone dancing and singing along to all of the words.
For the first time having this type of event at Big Bear, I think it turned out pretty well. I am definitely looking forward to next time.
