The Movement – Side by Side
Released August 2013
The Movement recently released their 4th album “Side-by-Side” (Which is also the name of a pretty cool documentary, check it out on IMDB friends).
Was this album on your music radar? I’m glad it was on mine! I would have missed out if I wasn’t following them @TheMovementVibe (Yup I’m suggesting you do the same). Their tweets worked, I bought Side-by-Side the day it was released on ITunes.
If you want to get a feel for Side-by-Side watch this video of track #4 – “Sweet Life.”

Who are The Movement? Current members are Joshua Swain, Jason “Smiles” Schmidt and Gary Jackson. The band originally formed back in 2004 in Columbia, South Carolina, but currently reside in the land of cheesesteaks, cracked bells and way to many Wawa gas stations. That’s not a criticism; Philly is a great city, Go Birds!
I stumbled onto The Movements music back in 2011 when I picked up “Set Sail.” I was instantly impressed by the catchiness of the album. “Set Sail” was released in 2008; the 1st song is called “Say Hello” I challenge you to listen to that song and not bob your head.
“Cause we lifting you high up by your boot straps.“

They followed that album up with 2012’s “One More Night.” Just as catchy as “Set Sail” and equally enjoyable. The challenge posed earlier certainly still applies to the song ‘Something to Say.”
“Oooh, Once upon a time not long ago”

Okay, Okay, Lets talk about Side-by-Side now. The first thing that struck me about this album was the addition of horn(s), which I love being a long time “Less than Jake” fan.
The first track ‘Echo” is extremely smooth - Like Vince Vaughn in “Swingers” smooth. It’ a great start to the album, so F@cking money, like a bear with big claws (You’d have to watch Swingers to understand that). The trumpet adds this really cool jazzy element to “Echo.” It’s a standout song on Side-by-Side in my eyes. Other standouts in no particular order are “Sweet Life, Mile High, Moonshine, Side-by-Side and Another Woman.”
“Sweet Life” was my favourite song on Side-by-Side, and would absolutely make my shortlist of songs of the summer. Great, positive lyrics and a beat that’s impossible to resist.
The Movement certainly know how to craft catchy songs. Side-by-Side is the type of album you put on a party if you’re looking to turn heads. Just sit back and wait for partygoers to ask what album you’re playing, and where can they get it.
In the end I have to say Side-by-Side has made a great addition to my extensive music library. I loved the ska influence and all around vibe of the entire album. If you want to give them a listen follow this link and enjoy.
